Varenyky is a Ukrainian dish that ranks second in popularity (because the borscht takes first one 🙂 ). On the evening before Christmas, which is called Christmas Eve, Ukrainian families prepare 12 fasting dishes, including varenyky with potatoes.

Each region of Ukraine has its own traditions and cooking methods. As a rule, Ukrainians cook these dumplings or steam them. Varenyky can have a variety of salty or sweet fillings: potatoes, cabbage, meat, cheese, berries, poppy seeds and many others.
